No thanks on the No Carb
Well Easter came and all the candy that comes with it....and boy did I enjoy that. But the scary part is I found myself eating LOTS of sugar and in a pattern I didn't like. So I decided I needed to break that "addiction" to sugar and go low carb for a bit. Now I've done low carb before. More than once. It "works" till you stop following a very difficult to sustain diet. Then it seems the weight flys back on even faster than you'd imagine. None the less the success (albeit temporary)of my past Atkins adventures spurred me on. The first day was wonderful. I could not believe how great I felt in the evening...no falling asleep on the couch for me, even though I'd run 5 + miles. By the evening of the second day I told Sandor, "I just know tomorrow is going to be really hard for me." But that was more because of the drive for sugar not being broken. I was right. Well, I made it through that day although I was feeling rather sluggish and did a workout but it wasn't great by any means. Fourth day...horrid. I ran 4 miles. Probably the worst 4 miles I've ever run. I had NO energy. And to top it off I woke in the middle of the night to intense kidney pain....which come to find out kidney stones are a negative side effect to low carb diets! So here I sit on day five having decided that this is NOT for me...ever. I need healthy carbs in my diet. I WANT healthy carbs in my diet. I simply cannot manage as a runner on a strict low carb diet. In spite of my intentions to go low carb for a week or two to break my sugar addiction I am going to begin reintroduction tomorrow. I will start with the lowest of the good/healthy carbs like berries and the like. Here's hoping tomorrow's run goes MUCH better. I guess the only bummer is having to give up all the fats I've been able to enjoy like bacon and mayo. That's okay...rather trade those in for a nice whole wheat pita spread with hummus and cukes! Yummo.
