February 2, 2003. It was one of those mornings when you wake up knowing something is about to happen.... Sandor and I lay awake chatting, Jacob and Andrew were still sleeping. You know that feeling? You know something is going to happen and you just quietly wait for it? That's kind of how it felt. And then...
My water broke. Well, Tim's I should say. And that, obviously, set off a chain of events that would wrap up the day with two small babies in my arms. When you are in the midst of an experience like the birth of a child, or children as was my case, you think you will never forget the details...but you do. Some memories do slip away while others linger. I hope the more important things are the ones that stuck.
I remember how my neighbors...Toby, Vicky, Megan and Heather took Jacob and Andrew in for the next 24 hours and made them feel right at home and how I heard afterward that Rocky (their dog) pulled them up and down the street through the snow on a sled...THANKS guys!!
I remember calling my parents to tell them we were going to the hospital and being sad that my mom's plane was arriving the following morning...so she would miss the birth (by only a few hours as it turned out)...Sorry mom!
I remember thinking "I should have known this would happen!" after I had "nested" all day the day before....hmmm? I remember wishing I had also got the grocery shopping done...oh well.
I remember being delighted to arrive at the hospital, have an ultrasound and find TWO babies in the vertex (head down) position.
I remember long hours walking the halls trying to make my labor progress...and it did...slowly.
I remember Sandor being an AMAZING support person. I remember he snuck off and bought me a reese peanut butter cup because that's what I wanted! Thanks sweetie.
I remember the snow...inches and inches (or was it feet?) that fell outside that day in Waconia, Minnesota.
I remember being the ONLY mom in labor at the hospital that day! What a treat!!
I remember seeing two bassinets waiting to hold my two little ones.
I remember the pain.
I remember the JOY.
I remember Sandor saying..."Here he comes!" And KNOWING it was Timothy who was about to be born.
I remember holding Timothy while the Dr. and nurse did an ultrasound to see what position Sarah was in.
I remember that she was breech...she'd turned during labor. And I remember that we were all okay with that.
I remember a very LONG 45 minutes that passed as we waited for Sarah to be born. And how I wanted to hold Timothy but chose not to because the contractions were hard and I was afraid I would squeeze him. So Sandor held him...LUCKY!
I remember the moment Sarah's water broke and that she was in a "butt first" breech position and that she was out in one push. That's my girl!
I remember holding 2 precious babies in my arms at one time and feeling so very blessed.
I remember how pleased we all were...Sandor and I, the doctors, and staff that everything went so very well.
I remember how tiny Timothy and Sarah were...each just 4 lbs 14 oz.
I remember a host of other strange and not so strange details.
I remember feeling like that moment, those moments would last forever. That my tiny babies would be tiny babies forever. I was wrong. And that's okay...today they are SIX YEARS OLD!!And together we are making lots of new memories....for all of us to remember.
Happy Birthday Twins!!
